A Collaborative OT & PT Approach for Torticollis
Torticollis is a condition where neck muscles on one side tighten or shorten, causing the head to tilt or turn. This limits range of motion, leading to prolonged pressure on one side of the head, resulting in flattening and asymmetrical head and facial development. Reduced mobility can also affect visual range, body awareness, hand-eye coordination, and later gross motor skills due to asymmetrical postural control.
MNRI (Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration) supports individuals with torticollis by addressing neuromuscular imbalances:
-
Reflex Reintegration: Stimulates and integrates reflexes related to head and neck movement to improve tone, coordination, and balance.
-
Muscle Relaxation: Uses gentle touch and exercises to reduce tension and promote proper alignment.
-
Body Awareness: Enhances posture, movement, and spatial orientation through sensory and motor input.
-
Neuroplasticity: Encourages new neural connections to improve movement patterns and posture.
MNRI is typically part of a comprehensive plan including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical care under professional guidance.
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method that supports the craniosacral system (brain, spinal cord, and surrounding structures).
For infants with Torticollis, it may:
-
Reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation.
-
Improve neck mobility and range of motion.
-
Enhance circulation and cerebrospinal fluid flow.
-
Regulate the autonomic nervous system for calming effects.
Combined Approach Benefits
-
Using MNRI and craniosacral therapy alongside positioning strategies and gentle stretching provides a comprehensive, proactive treatment to prevent secondary issues and developmental delays.
-
Treatment plans are developed collaboratively by Clinical Director and Occupational Therapist Padra Smith and Physical Therapist Cathy Procopio.
-
Cathy Procopio brings 30 years of pediatric experience and certifications in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, NeuroDevelopmental Treatment, and other mind-body practices.
-
Padra Smith specializes in reflex integration (MNRI and Sally Goddard Method), sensory integration, and therapeutic listening programs.
This multidisciplinary, holistic approach—supported by collaboration with pediatric medical providers—ensures individualized care to support each child’s development.
